The new FIFTYSIX collection presented by Vacheron Constantin

FIFTYSIX. A name and a date evoking an iconic model presented in 1956, the 6073 reference.

This timepiece represents the creativity displayed by Vacheron Constantin during the 1950s. Its design is distinguished by the shape – and notably its lugs, each representing a branch of the Maltese cross, which has become a symbol of the Manufacture.

The importance of 6073 reference in the history of the Maison is linked to the fact that it was one of its first watches to be equipped with a self-winding movement. Calibre 1019/1 was renowned for its precision and reliability, at a time when most other timepieces were driven by manual-winding mechanisms. Moreover, its case featured a water-resistant construction (with a multi-sided caseback).

There is a strong affinity between the 6073 model presented in 1956 and the FIFTYSIX collection presented in 2018, which reintegrates in a contemporary way several characteristics of 1950s watches.

The most remarkable example of this continuity is the aesthetic referral to the Maltese cross, evoked by both models’ lugs. The Maltese cross recalls the shape of a component formerly used in mechanical movements and it is a symbol of the horological excellence of the Maison, which since more than 260 years has been transmitting the Métiers d’Arts of high-end watchmaking.

An important link to the past lies in the particular shape of the box-type crystal, which rises well above the bezel. Originally made in the past from Plexiglas or mineral glass, it is now in sapphire, a more scratch-resistant material.

All the proposed versions are equipped with a self-winding movement: a transparent caseback allows to appreciate the movement finishing – Côtes de Genève, circular graining and snailing – and the new oscillating weight specifically designed by Vacheron Constantin for this collection.

One of the FIFTYSIX collection distinguishing characteristics is the its sector-type dial. While the chapter ring, punctuated by Arabic numerals alternating with baton-type hour-markers, brings to its 1950s inspiration, the presence of two subtle tones on the surface adds a note of elegance and refinement.

It is the reinterpretation of its own roots which gives the FIFTYSIX collection a distinctive and unique style.

For the first time in its history, Vacheron Constantin presents a classic collection in gold and in steel, applying the same aesthetic standards.
