Swiss watchmaking industry birth: Calvin, Geneva and the Swiss valleys' role

Swiss watchmaking firm was born thanks to Calvinism: the disapproval for luxury and its symbols, moved jewellers to direct their craftmanship to micromechanics, turning into watchmakers. In XVII Century, Geneva was the world pole for watchmaking, together with London. Protestant ethic confirmed to be an important stimulus for industry development.

On XVIII, some of the too many watchmakers in Geneva moved toward the Jura mountains, in the valleys today known as the “watchmaking valleys”. La-Chaux-de-Fonds, the Vallée des Joux, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, all belonging to that area, are still nowadays center of the top level mechanical watchmaking industry.
