How to set the date avoiding mechanical and… intellectual issues!

Movimento del Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar. Dettaglio del meccanismo della “grande data”

A normal watch with date cannot distinguish among the different months duration, so it is necessary to correct the date in those months with less than 31 days. These operations are equally necessary when you want to put on a watch again after a long time. But… pay attention! The date setting has two problems, a mechanical one and an intellectual one.

In order to avoid the mechanical problem it is absolutely necessary to avoid making the rapid correction of the date between 9 pm and 3 am, when the normal date-setting device is already operative. In this case, the system of rapid correction may cause (repairable but expensive) damages to the toothed wheels involved in the operation.

The intellectual problem lies in the adjustment of the date changing at midday… instead of midnight! This problem (which would earn the owner a prize for his/her absent-mindedness!) can be solved paying attention to the hour set on the watch, which must correspond to the correct night-day position.

Here is the right method to set the date.

–       Extract the crown in the position of time setting and move forward the hands until the date changes (midnight). Move the hands forward beyond the first 3 hours (out of the “dangerous” zone);

–       Push the crown completely (winding position);

–       Extract the crown in the position of date correction and go forward until obtaining the correct date;

–       Push the crown completely (winding position);

–       Extract the crown in the position of time setting and move the hands forward until the correct hour.

For those watches with button correction, the third step will be just pushing the button.

Following this simple operative sequence you will be able to set exactly every watch, avoiding mechanical failure and awkward day date changing.
